EllieEllie is an online jewellery, gift, and homeware retailer based in the UK. Their emphasis is on the individual, with their business built around personalised products.
EllieEllie focuses on personalised items. Unlike regular retailers, who can pick and ship as soon as a purchase is made, personalised goods take time to prepare before dispatch. In order to meet the expectations of online shoppers, particular pressure was placed on the warehouse to ship as quickly as possible.
The company’s existing warehousing software was a complex, custom-built system which served the needs of the back office, but which did not offer easy access to the key statistics and performance metrics which would help to boost efficiency in the warehouse.
Identifying their needs
The new system needed to allow the warehouse team to track performance, respond instantly to problems, and to quickly identify inefficiency. In order to minimise training costs and ensure a smooth workflow, EllieEllie wanted a clean and clear interface which displayed and contextualised the key stats from the much more complex warehouse software.
To provide feedback on performance and help streamline workflow, EllieEllie wanted a ‘dashboard’ that would be displayed on multiple screens in their warehouse. These would allow the non-technical warehouse staff access to key performance metrics, as well as display scrolling order-picking and processing data to their team.
This also required an admin interface which would allow users to intuitively edit, update, and prioritise tasks and data.
Meeting their needs
In order to meet EllieEllie’s needs, we developed a custom built system that interfaced directly with their existing warehousing software. With a clean, clear, branded design, it not only allowed for the presentation of key data, but also added to the brand profile within the company.
To allow warehouse staff to prioritise and respond to events as they happen, we implemented an intuitive admin control panel based around a flexible reporting system with key metrics grouped by screen. This gave staff the ability to change the way data was displayed and to create thresholds and targets. The EllieEllie staff quickly mastered this system and used it to set shipping targets and measure performance.
Because EllieEllie is a dynamic business with an ever-developing product range, we knew it was necessary to ensure the system was fully customisable and modular, allowing staff to respond to changes in their processes. We implemented simple, straightforward options allowing users to reorder modules, allowing them to make key data prominent or to include new information.
How it helped
The system we created for EllieEllie allowed the company to improve its efficiency internally by streamlining their warehousing. Easy access to performance statistics also allowed them to incentivise their team and provided management with an at-a-glance overview, without the need to delve into their more complex warehousing tool.
Although customisation was not originally part of the brief, we responded to the need for on-the-fly adjustments. As well as offering this kind of everyday flexibility, the dashboard system we created was also designed to be scalable, allowing it to be rolled out to additional sites at minimal additional cost.
As EllieEllie continues to grow, the system we designed will grow with them. Thanks to our focus on flexibility, scalability, and customisation, our software solution is versatile enough to cope with the demands of rapid growth, delivering the same reliable information whether there are a hundred outstanding orders or ten thousand.
